<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've received a few messages asking about the cost of my recent trip backpacking in Northern Sweden. As such I thought I'd cobble something together giving a rough breakdown of the main costs, h</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">opefully this might be useful to those considering a similar trip.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Scandinavia is some what renowned for being on the expensive side and whilst I'll never argue our trip was cheap, I think it's fair to say that for the experience I had it wasn't overly expensive. We visited Sweden during Aug/Sept 2017, the <b>exchange rate</b> at the time was approx 10.3 SEK to £1. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We (Lee) were surprisingly organised and booked our <b>flights</b> around 10 months in advance, flying from Manchester to Stockholm, then Stockholm to Kiruna, all our flights were with SAS. Our bags were checked all the way through to Kiruna and the Stockholm layover times were roughly two hours on the way out and just over four on the way home. </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">£305 return.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">From Kiruna Airport it's a short journey to the town itself. Peter was adamant we'd be fine walking it "as long as there isn't a big fence when we get to this bit here", we got a taxi, split between the three of us the price was roughly the same as a single <b>bus ticket </b>at<b> </b>approx £5. Overall cost £10 each inc the return trip back to the airport for departure. There is a big fence.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We chose to have a night in Kiruna on arrival and the same again before flying home. This decision was kind of dictated by our flight times so it may be possible to avoid this depending on when you arrive in Kiruna and how you intend to travel to your start point etc. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For our <b>accommodation</b> <b>in Kiruna</b> we stayed at the excellent <a href="http://www.spiskiruna.se/?lang=en" target="_blank">SPiS hostel</a>, again as there was three of us we split the cost and booked a private room, I'm not sure but if travelling solo this may be slightly cheaper for a single bed in a shared room. The cost per person for two nights was £61, this price didn't include breakfast. The hostel was very clean, the beds comfy, shared showers in the corridor on each floor, free wifi and located close to the bus stop/shops/pizza. The hostel offers a <b>baggage storage</b> facility. This isn't strictly necessary but we chose to store a bag their until our return. The cost of this was 50 SEK/night, around £13 each in total.</span></div>

</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">From Kiruna we got the <b>bus</b> to our start point at the Turiststation in Abisko. This took around an hour and cost £18 each. We also got the bus from our finishing point of Nikkaluokta back to Kiruna which took an hour and 20 minutes with the price being about the same, so £36 to get from Kiruna and back. Alternatively it's </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">possible to get the train to Abisko but for some reason this didn't seem to be available when we were looking in to it so I'm not sure if it's any cheaper than the bus.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For </span><b style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">insurance</b><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">, 12 days cover for me came to £25.94. No doubt this could probably be found a little cheaper or people may well be covered through existing policies so you might be able to avoid this cost, I wasn't at the time so this is what I went with. The cover appeared pretty comprehensive, even including things like a helicopter evacuation should it have been necessary. Thankfully, it wasn't.</span><br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've tried to include all the main expenditure in the above but obviously this doesn't include absolutely everything. The <b>total </b>of these<b> main costs</b> comes to around £450. Things missing which may need to be factored in include transport to and from the airport from home, food and drink for the days spent travelling, food for on the trail etc. I haven't included these here as they're entirely dependent on your choices/location etc. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We had a meal in Kiruna on the night we arrived and also on the night before flying home. We ate at the Pizzeria Palladium which served up really good pizza with all manner of toppings, it was also close to the hostel, from memory this cost around £10-£12 per person/meal. I haven't had an alcoholic drink for a good number of years now so can't comment on the cost of alcohol for those who like a drink. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Vistasstugan store</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The above total doesn't include the cost of all the <b>food </b>eaten whilst<b> on trail</b>. We took all our supplies with us from the UK for the full 9 days on trail. This was partly due to our route not passing many STF huts but also because we'd heard the supplies available are sometimes quite limited, and also (understandably) quite expensive. As our trip wasn't long after the Fjallraven Classic had taken place we weren't sure how much would be available in the couple of huts we were due to pass. As it turned out the two huts we did go in were quite well stocked. The photo's below show the price lists for the Vistasstuggan hut. Peter would probably advise you avoid the meatballs. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Hopefully this post will be of some use to those considering a similar trip. No doubt I've missed a few things but hopefully this covers all the main expenditure. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Edit 26/7/17 - As we weren't planning to use or pass many of the STF huts we didn't sign up for their membership, as such we had to pay 150 SEK to use the facilities at the one hut we did visit. Day visits are free for STF members so this might be worth considering if you're planning to use the hut system and/or camp near them. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is the first of a series of posts from</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> a trip to Arctic Sweden in Aug/Sept 2017. The trip</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> covered approx 210km over 9 days hiking our own route from Abisko to Nikkaluokta with no resupply.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This was my first time visiting Sweden and put simply, I fell in love with it, I'm certain it won't be my last hiking trip in this region.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This edit condenses the trip in to around 5 minutes, I've a lot of unused footage so when time allows I'll be posting a few longer edits which covers the trip in a little more detail.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'll post something of a trip report with route information and some details of the gear I took with me once I've finished going through my photo's. </span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'm afraid there are no prizes for correctly guessing this pack </span><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">was modelled after the beautiful <a href="https://www.laufbursche-gear.de/products/packs/packsack-plus/" target="_blank">Laufbursche PACKsack PLUS</a>. I've long been an admirer of Laufbursche packs and one of the first UL style packs I lusted after was the Huckepack. I very nearly bought the PACKsack PLUS when it was first launched but regrettably didn't go through with it. Unfortunately due to the ill health of Mateusz at Laufbursche the shop is currently closed for an uncertain period of time, you can read more on his story here - </span></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">https://www.ilovelaufbursche.de.</span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've been thinking about making a zipper style pack for some time but never quite sat down and got on with it, I hadn't even really decided to make this one until a couple of weeks ago whilst I was making some shoulder straps for a different pack. As I was going through my fabrics I realised I had quite a few offcuts of Dyneema X so I thought I'd make an additional set of straps using some of the offcuts and then find a use for them at a later date. This kind of spiralled as I realised I very nearly had enough to make a small pack, albeit from four different colours, the next day this pack was born.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 1.4285714285714286em; margin-bottom: 0.35714285714285715em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The shoulder straps use 10mm CCF foam and 3d mesh on the underside which might seem a little overkill for the loads it's ever likely to carry but should make for a comfortable ride regardless of what I manage to cram inside. </span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've used various shoulder strap pockets in the last few years and find them super useful but have never really been happy with the bulk and swing of aftermarket pockets you attach to the straps. After using the Pa'lante Simple pack over the summer I've come to love the built in stretch mesh pockets so added some to this build.</span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Not exactly pushing the boundaries of lightweight pack design but I've always wanted to make my own backpack so here it is, attempt number 1.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I opted for a simple no frills pack with no hipbelt/frame etc and a pretty standard UL pack layout of two side pockets, mesh main pocket, roll top closure and top strap. I've found this type of pack (frame/hipbelt-less) and this layout works fine for me when carrying less than 7kg or so.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The main fabric used is Dyneema X Gridstop which is approx 165g/sq m. I love this fabric for packs and found it really easy to work with which is always good. For the shoulder straps I used some 4mm 3D spacer mesh and evazote foam for the internal padding. The padding is pretty minimal but the shoulder straps are fairly wide so hopefully they'll prove comfortable enough for the loads I intend to use this pack with. The shoulder strap attachment points are reinforced with hybrid cuben.</div>
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #fcfcff; color: #141414; font-family: "verdana"; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YoaGb3IBj6c/V8f8knbiwpI/AAAAAAAACFM/Juk93GCbmKE_ZonWVH_nBvRaXyfbQL7RwCEw/s1600/IMG_0677.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YoaGb3IBj6c/V8f8knbiwpI/AAAAAAAACFM/Juk93GCbmKE_ZonWVH_nBvRaXyfbQL7RwCEw/s640/IMG_0677.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The pack is 260w x 165d X 790h (mm), if it was a perfect box shape the volume would be approx 34 litres, knock a bit off this to allow for the fabric used up forming the roll top and the useable internal volume comes in at around 30 litres. With that said the pack feels like a BIG 30 litres. I'd guesstimate total volume around 36l including the 3 pockets.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The front mesh pocket is 390mm high with 3 pleats in the fabric to allow for plenty of gear stuffage. The top of the pocket is elasticated which at the moment is adjustable using a cord lock. I thought this might be handy to allow for easier access and figured I can just tie the elastic off and trim the cord if I find I don't use the feature. I sewed a small loop to the top of the pocket which can be looped over the buckle for the top strap to help prevent the pocket from opening if stuffed full. The side pockets are 225mm high and are again pleated but with a non adjustable elastic opening. They easily take a Nalgene sized bottle plus some smaller bits or most of my tarp like shelters. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I went with a simple roll top closure and added 3 KAM snaps to the opening to help keep the top closed, I also added a couple of loops in the centre to ease opening the pack.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are 6 loops sewn around the back panel to allow a sit/back pad to be attached and another 6 loops around the front mesh pocket which allow attachment of some bungee over the mesh pocket or bits and pieces like ice axe/poles etc. The loops are offset front to back to allow some cord to be threaded zigzag up the sides of the pack for volume compression, I doubt I'll need to do this but the option is there if needed.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A while ago I picked up one of the BRS-3000T kits from Ruta Locura. I've used it a few times and it boils water quickly just like the original burner so I didn't really think anymore about it. The kit includes a carbon fiber lid, a custom (bent) BRS-3000T stove and a Ti foil heat shield which doubles as a cover for the bottom of the jetboil. The heat shield allows you to store the BRS-3000T inside the bottom of the pot amongst the flux fins. Since ordering mine the kit has been updated to include a Ti foil ring that acts as a small spacer between the stand and the flux ring.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The original setup including the cart stand comes in at 328g sans gas, this is what I've typically carried on past trips. Using the lightweight setup assumes you're already carrying some sort of ignition and that you have something in your kit you can handle a hot pot with but the lightweight setup drops the weight to 159g, roughly a 50% reduction. OK yeah, you could lose the stand, cosy, cup etc from the original setup but swapping out the burner would still provide a healthy weight saving</span><span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;">. I'm not really one for measuring boil times, partly because of all the variables but mainly because to me, it doesn't really matter that much if one system boils water 20 seconds faster than another. I did wonder how much difference there would be in efficiency so with some time to kill today I dug both setups out of the cupboard and made myself a few cups of coffee.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Both boils were done outside without any kind of windshield using 500ml of cold water straight from the tap. I've no idea what the ambient air temperature was or the start temperature of the water but the original setup took 1:55 to come to a rolling boil, using 6g of gas to get there. The lightweight setup took 2:05 and used 7g. Not much in it really. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">From Knowe Crags I doubled back and headed over Blencathra again and on to Foule Crag before descending to the col and heading East to Mungrisdale Common. There were some nice looking cornices on the descent to the col, with some footprints in the snow which went worryingly close to the edge. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">From Mungrisdale Common I made my way to Bowscale Fell where I stopped for a bite to eat.</span> It was still pretty chilly but the wind had died down so I had a leisurely early lunch sat in the sunshine enjoying the views towards Blencathra. Once fed and watered I headed over to Bannerdale Crags then back to the Col between there and Foule Crag. I'd planned to camp near the summit of Blencathra so when I was up there earlier I took note of the snow conditions at the summit, as everything was frozen solid I decided rather than spend an age melting ice/snow I'd dump my pack at the col and drop down and find some water from the upper River Glendermackin. Thankfully I didn't have to drop far before I found some running water and I was soon back at my pack with enough water for the night ahead.</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The extra couple of kilos did make the route back up Foule Crag feel like a bit of a slog, either that or my legs were getting a little tired but it didn't take too long to get to the top. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After another stop and mooch around on at the top of Foule Crag I found a suitable pitch for the night. It was still fairly early so I took my time pitching, had a brew, then took the short walk to Blencathra summit to enjoy the sunset. There was a winter skills group not far from the summit so I stopped and watched them for a while, practicing their self arrests looked like great fun in what was now a perfectly still evening. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was a nice clear evening with hardly any breeze so once it was dark enough I spent an hour or so wandering around taking night shots of the Tramplite Shelter. It was a little tricky to pick up any stars as there was some light pollution and the moon was quite bright but I managed to get a few photo's I'm semi happy with. Once I'd finished messing about with the camera it was back in to the shelter and I was soon fast asleep.</span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I woke around 2 am, the wind had picked up and was gusting pretty heavily, it seemed to be swirling and coming from different directions so I closed down the Tramplite Shelter and soon dozed off for a few more hours sleep. Come morning the wind had increased further and it was pretty much white out conditions, I measured a gust at 80km/h just before packing up. I needed to be back at the car and home my mid day so after a quick breakfast I struck camp and made my way back to the summit of Blencathra before descending via Scales Fell. </span></div>

There's a few things I'd change if I was to make another, for one its a little overbuilt for what will be used as a fair weather tarp but i'm pretty pleased with how well it's turned out, especially for a first attempt.</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Over the weekend of 9/10th January I managed to get over to the Lake District for my first wander and camp of the new year. The forecast was a little iffy but I don't get many weekends free to meet up with Peter and Lee so after looking at every available forecast we decided to go for it.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After a bit of a nightmare car journey to meet Lee we headed across to Langdale to meet up with Peter. Setting off an hour or so later than planned caught up with us at the other end of the day meaning our route ended up being cut short a little but hey-ho.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The weather was worse than forecast, rain lower down, sleet a bit higher up, gusting winds that kept changing direction, and every kind of weather except calm and clear through the night. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As we'd cut our route short we ended up pitching fairly early. This turned out to be a good decision as not long after the weather came in and didn't stop until 8am the next day. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was a bit of a wild night, I think Peter measured wind gusts of over 80mk/h but all three shelters (two Trailstars and Duomid) handled it well despite it constantly changing direction. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We were up and packed fairly early, getting down to Langdale via The Band for around 10am, after a quick breakfast in a local cafe it was time to head home. It was good to meet up with Lee and Peter again as I hadn't seen either of them since October. All in all a short but sweet little trip over to the Lakes for my first </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(hopefully of many)</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> camp of the new year :-)</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I managed to get out in the Packraft again recently, a nice steady 17km float down the River Ouse from Linton Lock Marina back home to York.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As usual the GoPro came along and I've cobbled something together from the footage. It's not the most exciting video on earth as this section of the Ouse is very flat with similar views for much of the day but it's a nice little record of the trip, hope you enjoy it. </span></div>
<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'd originally planned to walk the 19 or so km to Linton-on-Ouse as there's a footpath that runs alongside the river the whole way but as I didn't have the full day to play with I caught a lift up to Beningbrough and from there it was just a short walk to my starting point at Linton Lock Marina.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was the first time I'd been to the Marina and in the sunshine it looked to be a lovely little spot, with the picturesque weir, fish ladder and lock as well as the pub and campsite it could be an ideal overnight stop for a two day paddle from Ripon to York. I've also seen a few videos of people kayaking the fish ladder... maybe one for the future.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After a quick chat with the owner of the site he pointed me in the direction of the best place to launch and wished me well on my journey. With a light breeze helping to fill the inflation bag it didn't take long to get the raft inflated and with my pack secured to the front (do I have to say Bow?) it was time to head off. I found it a little tricky getting in to the raft from the slippery jetty as there was a bit of a drop but thankfully I didn't take an early swim and was soon on my way.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I had no real idea how long it would take to get back to York but figured if it was taking forever or if I encountered any problems I could just hop out (it's more an unsteady wobble-out at the moment) and walk along the adjacent footpath. After an hour or so I checked viewranger and found I'd travelled about 3.5km, most of which was gently floating along without any great effort. This was roughly my average speed for the entire 17km journey which seams ok, although I've nothing to compare it to at the moment so who knows. Viewranger showed I had a brief spell at 6 km/h but I can't imagine this was for long.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was good to spend some more time in the raft, at times the journey did feel like a bit of a slog due to the lack of any real current but it was good to get an idea of how fast the raft is on flat water. The views were pleasant but very much the same for most of the journey, being so low on the water meant at times it wasn't possible to see much beyond the tree lined banks. A Kingfisher was the wildlife highlight of the trip spotted near Beningbrough Hall as well a couple of Herons. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I think I spent around 5 or so hours in the raft altogether and with a bit of shuffling around managed to stay comfortable. I was surprised how difficult I found it to get to the bits and pieces I wanted from the external pockets of my backpack but better packing and more practice should help with this. It also gave me my first experience of rain whilst in the raft and I'm happy to report the spray deck kept me nice and dry as the showers came and went. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All in all a good/useful little day trip... not sure where I'll be heading to next with the packraft but I'm already looking forward to it :-)</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Over the last month or so I've been piecing together some new gear to allow me to take to the water when out backpacking. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've wanted a packraft for a number of years and with my birthday just around the corner I finally crumbled and raided my savings. After much deliberation </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I ordered an MRS Microraft which</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> arrived last week, I was hoping to get out the day before this trip but the weather had other ideas. I'd checked the forecast and it looked a little better for the following day so I figured I could wait one more night.</span><br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was glad I waited the extra day, blue skies and sunshine :-) A short drive North out of York followed by an even shorter walk landed me at a lovely little section of the River Ouse. I'd recce'd this spot a couple of weeks beforehand and thought it'd be a suitable place to have a first paddle. It's a nice wide section of the Ouse devoid of any real current with an easy put-in and not far from the car should I end up taking a swim.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To give a sense of how small the raft packs down the pack in the above photo is approx 28l in volume and easily took the raft, paddle, PFD, inflation bag, jacket and a few other bits and bobs. Taking a little time and folding it neatly it'll <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1knHmqDrPeM" target="_blank">squish down</a> pretty small and probably takes up about the same space as a two person tent. On my scales the raft inc seat, backrest and spray deck weighs 2,850g which isn't too bad.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duIIaaKo9n8" target="_blank">Inflating the raft</a> was simple enough using the supplied nylon bag, i</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">t took me around 5 good bag fulls then just needed topping up with the manual inflation valve. I've read online about tempering the packraft (topping up again once the internal air has had a chance to cool down) but this didn't seem to be necessary today. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once inflated it was time to hit the water! I was slightly nervous about getting in and out having only done so inside at home as practice but didn't have any real trouble. I didn't take the spray deck with me which in hindsight was a bit of an error, it's been a long time since I've done any kayaking and initially I was dripping water in to the raft with every stroke. I soon got the hang of it though and had a great couple of hours messing around on the water, remaining mostly dry. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I won't say much about the packraft until I've used it some more but it seemed pretty comfortable and manoeuvred surprisingly easily, more importantly it was great fun! I've already planned a few routes in both the Lake District and Scotland so hopefully I'll manage to get out later in the month for my first proper backpack with the raft. Good times ahead!</span></div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uziXsh5KkGA/VSgs91q-kvI/AAAAAAAABq0/NeM6BNnEd_k/s1600/IMG_0437-2-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uziXsh5KkGA/VSgs91q-kvI/AAAAAAAABq0/NeM6BNnEd_k/s1600/IMG_0437-2-2.jpg" height="478" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In December 2014 I received my custom cuben fiber shelter hand made in the U.K. by Colin Ibbotson, aka <a href="http://www.tramplite.com/">Tramplite</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'd been a fan of Colin's original <a href="http://www.tramplite.com/2013/10/myog-cuben-fibre-shelter.html" target="_blank">MYOG shelter</a> ever since the first pictures of it appeared online. It looked to have a superb combination of features including that all important Trailstar-esque wind shedding back end. Along with many others I'm sure, I hoped he'd one day go in to some sort of production. I met Colin on the <a href="http://outdoorsmh.blogspot.co.uk/p/tgo-challenge-2014.html" target="_blank">2014 TGO Challenge</a> and managed to get my name down for one of five initial shelters he was planning to make, mine is number three. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X5CF5Y0-cT8/VSgXWO56g-I/AAAAAAAABqc/5JXWEsars4c/s1600/IMG_0178.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X5CF5Y0-cT8/VSgXWO56g-I/AAAAAAAABqc/5JXWEsars4c/s1600/IMG_0178.jpg" height="212" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As above my shelter was completed in December 2014, pretty much to the exact day of when Colin had said it would be. I live close by so was able to pop round and pick the shelter up where Colin was kind enough to go through pitching the shelter with me. In addition to this he also emailed an excellent PDF pitching/care guide which explains clearly how to obtain a nice tight pitch. Any problems encountered during my initial tinkerings were rectified with a quick check of the guide and I was soon able to get a taut pitch every time. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqUV20DDtdY/VSgx0cXYbaI/AAAAAAAABrE/1p9CGdkvVeY/s1600/IMG_0204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WqUV20DDtdY/VSgx0cXYbaI/AAAAAAAABrE/1p9CGdkvVeY/s1600/IMG_0204.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pitching requires 6 pegs which makes it approx 675-720g total weight depending on peg choice. So far I've used a combination of four 9 inch Sorex pegs from Ruta Locura and two Easton Gold Backpacker pegs but after recently mashing a Sorex I'll be switching to all Eastons as they've always served me well with the Trailstar. It pitches using a single pole set to 125cm, so far I've used my Black Diamond Distance FL poles without any problems, I'm yet to try it with the Pacers but believe <a href="http://aktovate1.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Gordon Green</a> has done so, again with no problems. The worst I've pitched in to date is a constant 20km/h or so breeze (gusting in to the 30s) and It went up easily, once pitched the shelter was rock solid. Admittedly 20km/h isn't very strong but hopefully it's an indication of how storm worthy the shelter will prove to be.</span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The front of the shelter features a superb guy line system which is used to tension the shelter/beak as well as deploy the doors in their various configurations. If you've made it this far or read any of my previous posts you'll have realised I'm no wordsmith, so rather than me try to explain how this all works take a look at this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDbUixw4GeQ" target="_blank">overview video</a> by David Beechey showing both the front guy system and the excellent door set up. I've a number of videos of the shelter I've not had chance to edit as yet and will add these to the blog when time allows. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
As can be seen in the photo below I also opted for the inner to go with the shelter. The inner features two doors with inverted T zips, a cuben tub floor and breathable nylon walls with the doors being part nylon, part mesh. The inner attaches to four of the outer pegging points and then clips in place using a number of loops and cord lock toggles. The inner floor is approx 75 x 255cm which makes the shelter very roomy for someone of my height (170cm), there's enough space to store bits and bobs at both ends which I like. The inner also allows access to the rear V shaped section under the fly which can be used as a storage area and is large enough to store a pack and more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xpdSDZsNDNE/VSrNdozwH3I/AAAAAAAABrY/hcU9TQxaAgg/s1600/IMG_0134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xpdSDZsNDNE/VSrNdozwH3I/AAAAAAAABrY/hcU9TQxaAgg/s1600/IMG_0134.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The shelter including fly, inner, all lines & stuff sack comes to 632g <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(22.29oz)</span>, with the fly, inner floor and stuff sack being made from 25.4 g/m² <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(.74 oz/sqyd)</span> Cuben Fiber. I was lucky enough to have my shelter made from the last of Colin's Black Cuben Fiber.<br />
<br />
It's still early days with the Tramplite shelter so this post is a first look rather than any kind of review but for what it's worth, so far I can't fault it. One last thing worth mentioning is the quality of Colin's workmanship, simply put, it's superb.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've added a <a href="http://outdoorsmh.blogspot.co.uk/p/tramplite-shelter.html" target="_blank">separate page</a> to the blog which I'll continue to update with photo's, videos, links etc as time goes on. </div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTM1Q9G5DBk/VNTwUOUO7rI/AAAAAAAABoI/SncK58f13rE/s1600/DSCF9007-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mTM1Q9G5DBk/VNTwUOUO7rI/AAAAAAAABoI/SncK58f13rE/s1600/DSCF9007-2.jpg" height="424" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I really like the SoloMid, pitched nice and tight it's proved itself in a stiff breeze and I've found it large enough if I keep myself organised. One thing I've felt it's missing though is a tieback for the panel to the left of the door, so I decided to add my own...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This second tieback comes as standard on the larger MLD mids such as the Duomid and it's a handy feature giving the option of opening up the entire front of the shelter as shown in the photo's above and below.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I own the cuben fiber version of the SoloMid which made this modification extremely easy. All it took was a couple of stick on loops which are available from </span><a href="http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/tape.shtml" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" target="_blank">Zpacks</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">, a short length of bungee cord and a cord lock. I opted to use the 1.43oz weight cuben loops as they should be more than strong enough in this application and the white colour is quite transparent so it wouldn't stand out as much against the olive green cuben of the SoloMid.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Measuring up</span></div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG4Nzs-zXDc/VNJ2u2c1BeI/AAAAAAAABms/toTJ5ajESZw/s1600/IMG_0011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CG4Nzs-zXDc/VNJ2u2c1BeI/AAAAAAAABms/toTJ5ajESZw/s1600/IMG_0011.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To try and ensure the loops bonded well </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I took a little time to ensure the cuben was clean and smooth, a</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">fter measuring the spacing of the existing loops it was as simple as pealing off the backing paper and sticking the new loops in place. Job done. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Both doors half open (probably not something I'll use but another option with the mod)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Admittedly this isn't much of a mod but then it only took a couple of minutes, adding less than 4 grams </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">(0.142 oz)</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> to the weight of the SoloMid I feel it was a worthwhile addition.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A week or so ago I managed to nip to the Lakes for the first time this year, I'd hoped for a couple of camps but checking the forecast before leaving home suggested the weather was going to be pretty horrendous...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">...I decided to head over anyway as I was keen to stretch the legs but unfortunately for me the forecast was correct, with lots and lots of rain and winds up to 120km/h to smash it in to me I decided to retreat to the YHA and had a fun but rather moist couple of day walks instead.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Due to the rain the camera stayed safely tucked away in my pack but I recorded a few clips on the GoPro which I thought I'd share. Nothing special, just a record of my first Lakes wander of the new year. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All in all it's been a good year for me out in the hills with the </span><a href="http://outdoorsmh.blogspot.co.uk/p/tgo-challenge-2014.html" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" target="_blank">TGO Challenge</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> being one of the highlights. </span><br />

<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was my first TGO Challenge and I had a superb couple of weeks wandering across Scotland with Peter and Lee. Whilst I've not managed to squeeze in any of the other longer walks I'd hoped and I've not managed to get to the hills as often as I'd have liked, I've still managed quite a few good camps over the year. </span><br />
